Eating Clean, pregnant or not.

IMG_7938.JPG

One of the stranger things people have said to me during pregnancy, (and trust me there are so many its alarming) is "You're pregnant, who cares what you eat!?  This is the only time in your life when you have an excuse to eat whatever you want and get huge!"  Ummm... What?

Personally, I see this as a time in my life when I should be the MOST healthy.  I am growing a human.  Building brains and organs... creating a human life that I will raise into a little lady that is hopefully intelligent, respectful and kind.  Wouldn't feeding my body with a bunch of crap be creating bad habits from the start??

To each their own I suppose, and I of course have my moments where I simply just want that Diet Coke, or Burgerville, or piece of pie.  But about 90% of the time, I try to figure out what it is my body is craving, and fuel it with something healthy and delicious that is going to satisfy my craving in a healthy way... and in turn, fuel this little girls mind and body.

Below is a glimpse into a few of my favorite things I use to fuel my body and make sure I am giving this little lady and myself all of the proper nutrients, while staying full and happy.

Breakfast:

As soon as I wake up, I am ready for something quick, simple and delicious.  I wake up a little nauseous typically, so I need to eat immediately.  My go to and favorite is Trader Joes Greek Yogurt.

After getting that initial boost of protein, I make myself some bullet coffee.  I use drip coffee but always make sure to buy Free Trade, and organic.  I use 1 tsp of coconut oil, a dash of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon- and blend for 10 seconds... Can you say frothy, delicious and HEALTHY!?

I know some people use grass fed butter in theirs, but I personally love the way it tastes this way, so haven't ventured there quite yet.

After I have had my coffee, typically around 8:30/9:00, I make myself some avocado toast... ( I know so basic, but I can't help myself, its SO delicious.) or my hubby will make up some of these insanely amaze pancakes that are delightfully deceiving.  I put almond butter, coconut flakes and sliced bananas on them and drizzle pure maple syrup on top (about a tsp.).

When buying things like almond butter, maple syrup, etc. - check your ingredients and make sure there isn't anything that you can't read or don't know what it is.  With almond butter, I go for the RAW, with just almonds!  Maple syrup, just raw, maple syrup from TJ's is what we use.

This seasoning is seriously the most amazing stuff on the planet.  Sprinkle it on sandwiches, toast, bagels.  Amaze.  I use half of an organic avocado and Dave's Killer PowerSeed Bread.

Snacks:

Snacks throughout the day will vary.  I eat every 2-2.5 hours to stay full and so my metabolism is constantly moving.  My schedule is normally:

8:30-Breakfast

10:30-Snack

12:30/1:00- Lunch

3:30-Snack

6:00-Dinner

For snacks, it varies from cherries and a protein bar, to almonds and cucumbers, cottage cheese and pineapple - I typically try to have some form of protein, and a fruit or veggie.  And TONS and TONS of water.  I am constantly filling my water bottle, and can tell if I haven't had enough.  I start getting leg cramps in the night that are enough to send me straight to tears.

This is my favorite go to protein bar:

Lunch:

I have always loved replacing one of my meals (either breakfast or lunch) with a shake.  Personally, I love Herbalife or Vega.  I have a huge Granny Smith apple with it, and its satisfying, gives me plenty of yummy calories and its packed with tons of vitamins and minerals for baby.

I do two scoops of the healthy meal, and one tbsp of protein powder to add protein. I just mix it with water, or almond milk depending on how creamy I want it :). There are some amazing flavors and recipes out there too!

Dinner:

Honestly dinner is a hard one to give you a "daily idea" of what we eat, because our menu changes so often.  We typically try to keep dinner no carbs, veggies and protein.  If we have carbs, it will be whole grain brown rice, quinoa or whole wheat pasta.  We even make homemade pizza from scratch with Trader Joe's whole wheat pizza crust and its YUM.

My go to dinner during the week is Spaghetti with Zuchhini noodles.  I will add a similar recipe to mine below.  I make my sauce from scratch, or buy Trader Joe's organic marinara sauce and add mushrooms, onion and spices.

Cravings:

When I have a craving, its pretty rare that I have that food in my home- We just don't buy junk.  I have craved Diet Coke from day 1 of this pregnancy, and although I have given in a few times, I realize my body is probably craving salt or carbonation.  So I have gone for these sparkling waters from TJ's.  THEY ARE SOOOOO GOOD.  I love the pineapple and grapefruit versions, but they have several different flavors.

I think the key for cravings, is number one- try to figure out what it is your body is lacking and why you are having these cravings- attempt to fulfill them with healthy choices and you will feel much better in the long run!  Most importantly though, GRACE.  Every once in a while, give your body and your brain some grace and eat some Burgerville, pie and a Diet Coke.  For me, it keeps me sane and it tastes a heck of a lot better when you know its going to be few and far between and it's truly a treat.

Recently, I have been craving pie and baked goods- so yesterday I made some delicious homemade oatmeal, chocolate chip and walnut cookies.  Yep, licked alllll that batter off the mixing spoon.  Grace, my friends.

I hope this is a little bit helpful, and helps you to know that all of us struggle with eating clean ALL.THE.TIME.  Its a normal fact of life.  Being pregnant doesn't mean go crazy on cravings and sweets and fast food.  FUEL YOUR BODY!!!  Take care of that little human and give them clean, healthy nutrients.  If you are not pregnant, your body is still your space, its YOURS. You choose. Take care of it!

Feel free to ask any questions about products, ingredients or other treats I enjoy.  I am by NO MEANS a nutritionist or a doctor, but I love food and know what has worked for me.
