Eating Clean, pregnant or not.

IMG_7938.JPG

One of the stranger things people have said to me during pregnancy, (and trust me there are so many its alarming) is "You're pregnant, who cares what you eat!?  This is the only time in your life when you have an excuse to eat whatever you want and get huge!"  Ummm... What?

Personally, I see this as a time in my life when I should be the MOST healthy.  I am growing a human.  Building brains and organs... creating a human life that I will raise into a little lady that is hopefully intelligent, respectful and kind.  Wouldn't feeding my body with a bunch of crap be creating bad habits from the start??

To each their own I suppose, and I of course have my moments where I simply just want that Diet Coke, or Burgerville, or piece of pie.  But about 90% of the time, I try to figure out what it is my body is craving, and fuel it with something healthy and delicious that is going to satisfy my craving in a healthy way... and in turn, fuel this little girls mind and body.

Below is a glimpse into a few of my favorite things I use to fuel my body and make sure I am giving this little lady and myself all of the proper nutrients, while staying full and happy.

Breakfast:

As soon as I wake up, I am ready for something quick, simple and delicious.  I wake up a little nauseous typically, so I need to eat immediately.  My go to and favorite is Trader Joes Greek Yogurt.

After getting that initial boost of protein, I make myself some bullet coffee.  I use drip coffee but always make sure to buy Free Trade, and organic.  I use 1 tsp of coconut oil, a dash of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon- and blend for 10 seconds... Can you say frothy, delicious and HEALTHY!?

I know some people use grass fed butter in theirs, but I personally love the way it tastes this way, so haven't ventured there quite yet.

After I have had my coffee, typically around 8:30/9:00, I make myself some avocado toast... ( I know so basic, but I can't help myself, its SO delicious.) or my hubby will make up some of these insanely amaze pancakes that are delightfully deceiving.  I put almond butter, coconut flakes and sliced bananas on them and drizzle pure maple syrup on top (about a tsp.).

When buying things like almond butter, maple syrup, etc. - check your ingredients and make sure there isn't anything that you can't read or don't know what it is.  With almond butter, I go for the RAW, with just almonds!  Maple syrup, just raw, maple syrup from TJ's is what we use.

This seasoning is seriously the most amazing stuff on the planet.  Sprinkle it on sandwiches, toast, bagels.  Amaze.  I use half of an organic avocado and Dave's Killer PowerSeed Bread.

Snacks:

Snacks throughout the day will vary.  I eat every 2-2.5 hours to stay full and so my metabolism is constantly moving.  My schedule is normally:

8:30-Breakfast

10:30-Snack

12:30/1:00- Lunch

3:30-Snack

6:00-Dinner

For snacks, it varies from cherries and a protein bar, to almonds and cucumbers, cottage cheese and pineapple - I typically try to have some form of protein, and a fruit or veggie.  And TONS and TONS of water.  I am constantly filling my water bottle, and can tell if I haven't had enough.  I start getting leg cramps in the night that are enough to send me straight to tears.

This is my favorite go to protein bar:

Lunch:

I have always loved replacing one of my meals (either breakfast or lunch) with a shake.  Personally, I love Herbalife or Vega.  I have a huge Granny Smith apple with it, and its satisfying, gives me plenty of yummy calories and its packed with tons of vitamins and minerals for baby.

I do two scoops of the healthy meal, and one tbsp of protein powder to add protein. I just mix it with water, or almond milk depending on how creamy I want it :). There are some amazing flavors and recipes out there too!

Dinner:

Honestly dinner is a hard one to give you a "daily idea" of what we eat, because our menu changes so often.  We typically try to keep dinner no carbs, veggies and protein.  If we have carbs, it will be whole grain brown rice, quinoa or whole wheat pasta.  We even make homemade pizza from scratch with Trader Joe's whole wheat pizza crust and its YUM.

My go to dinner during the week is Spaghetti with Zuchhini noodles.  I will add a similar recipe to mine below.  I make my sauce from scratch, or buy Trader Joe's organic marinara sauce and add mushrooms, onion and spices.

Cravings:

When I have a craving, its pretty rare that I have that food in my home- We just don't buy junk.  I have craved Diet Coke from day 1 of this pregnancy, and although I have given in a few times, I realize my body is probably craving salt or carbonation.  So I have gone for these sparkling waters from TJ's.  THEY ARE SOOOOO GOOD.  I love the pineapple and grapefruit versions, but they have several different flavors.

I think the key for cravings, is number one- try to figure out what it is your body is lacking and why you are having these cravings- attempt to fulfill them with healthy choices and you will feel much better in the long run!  Most importantly though, GRACE.  Every once in a while, give your body and your brain some grace and eat some Burgerville, pie and a Diet Coke.  For me, it keeps me sane and it tastes a heck of a lot better when you know its going to be few and far between and it's truly a treat.

Recently, I have been craving pie and baked goods- so yesterday I made some delicious homemade oatmeal, chocolate chip and walnut cookies.  Yep, licked alllll that batter off the mixing spoon.  Grace, my friends.

I hope this is a little bit helpful, and helps you to know that all of us struggle with eating clean ALL.THE.TIME.  Its a normal fact of life.  Being pregnant doesn't mean go crazy on cravings and sweets and fast food.  FUEL YOUR BODY!!!  Take care of that little human and give them clean, healthy nutrients.  If you are not pregnant, your body is still your space, its YOURS. You choose. Take care of it!

Feel free to ask any questions about products, ingredients or other treats I enjoy.  I am by NO MEANS a nutritionist or a doctor, but I love food and know what has worked for me.

Pampering yourself amidst the crazy!

//NATURAL BEAUTY//

Alright guys.... Im about to be BRUTALLY honest.  For me, this pregnancy has been really really really hard.  Like, for the birds hard.  It took me years to get to a point in my life where i felt confident with my body, with my deflated but kinda bounced back breasts, my stretch marks around my belly button, wrinkles popping up all over the place, dark circles revealing how exhausted my schedule was making me, along with so many other things that with age, well... you just learn to embrace and accept as normal.

Then... the blessing of baby number three 8 years after my youngest Hudson was born. You guys...WHOA. My body is doing things I didn't even know it could do. Maybe its hormones because I'm growing a little lady in there? Maybe it's age and suddenly when you hit 30 you suck at being pregnant?  I am utterly exhausted ALL.THE.TIME.  Wearing heels makes me want to cry ten minutes after putting them on.  My legs for the first time are sporting a nice shade of cottage cheese. My breasts have grown to a terrifying place of... just NO.  Lord help me when my milk comes in!!  I pull out my most comfy pair of sweats and wouldn't you know it... too tight.  I've cried... a lot.  I have even found myself gazing at this picture from our honeymoon just 7 months ago... envious of this woman, envious of her body and that margarita she was about to inhale.

But you know... the more I feel this little life move around, the more I grow and the more time I spend in reflection of whats actually happening to me...I feel effing empowered.  I don't think when I was in my early 20's pregnant with the boys that I truly appreciated what was going on inside of me.  I knew that I loved those little boys immensely and that I loved being their momma... But I don't think I ever truly grasped the miracle that is pregnancy.   I'm growing a HUMAN you guys.  I have dreamt my entire life of what it would be like to raise a little girl.  To teach a little girl how to apply makeup, how to dance, how to sing and how to be a classy lady that others respect.  Would I want my daughter to be so concerned with her body and so wrapped up in EXTERNAL treasures?  Women all over the world beg, and pay millions of dollars to receive this miracle, and some are never able to feel the incredible feeling of a life moving and thriving inside of them.  I am living that miracle.

So I recently had a conversation with myself...  A real, valid, honest conversation.  I realized that the things I do to take care of my mind, my body and my soul could be helping others achieve more peace.  One of those things is taking care of my skin, and taking those extra moments to give yourself little mini facials every day!

Lets talk about skin care...  During pregnancy there are so many DON'TS... Don't use retinol, don't get botox, don't don't don't.  Here are the products I am currently using that are DEFINITE DO's and have helped me to recharge and pamper myself amidst the crazy emotions!

//SKIN CARE//

The products below are like crack for pregnant women, or for tired skin in general. Here are a few of my current FAVS.

My husband laughs at me every time he hears me massaging my face at night, cuz it feels THAT good.  hehe.

-AM ROUTINE-

This body butter is LIFE.  I rub it on my tummy every morning!!  It has kept me moisturized and feeling like it just may keep those pesky stretch marks away, or at least not as noticeable in the end.

After cleansing and using my Clarisonic in the shower (if you don't have one, I highly suggest getting one), I use these peel pads right when I get out of the shower while my face is still a little damp.  They are incredible for removing any extra dirt that cleansing doesn't get, and for exfoliating your skin gently.  (think Noxema- but WAY better.).

After using the peel pads, I have started using this serum during pregnancy to help with firming and tightening of the skin.  There are a ton of products that you CAN'T use while pregnant for firming the skin, but this one truly WORKS and is amazing.  I got mine on Amazon!  Link below.

After massaging and pressing the firming liquid into my face and neck, I do the same thing with this tinted moisturizer.  I am SO happy with the coverage of this.  It smooths out the skin, has SPF 32, but still allows that dewey glow and not the cakey makeup look.  So amazing.

-PM ROUTINE-

Night time is my favorite time to escape, take care of myself in the midst of the quiet once the kiddos are in bed and pamper myself with these products.

This balm is less of a cleanser feel, and has more of an oily texture.  I remember before using EVER, I wanted my skin to feel squeaky clean.  I found out that's actually REALLY bad for your skin.  I spend a few minutes massaging this balm all over my face and neck, ( even removes eye makeup ) and then wipe it clean with a wash cloth.  You guys... HEAVEN.

After using the cleansing balm, once a week I apply this overnight facial oil.  I did ask my OB if this was ok, considering it has a little retinol in it, and she said with it being only once a week, I am good!  This stuff is like gold in a bottle.  Helps minimize pores, gives me a glow and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

These products are just some of my favs currently while pregnant.  EVER and EMINENCE are both all natural and good for you ingredients that are absolutely safe for pregnancy and beyond- and truly WORK.  They also help you maintain the natural beauty everyone so desperately desires.  Embrace those freckles, love those wrinkles, but hydrate and care for your largest organ in your body!  Your skin!!!

Most importantly,  I hope this helps you remember to take care of you, take time to pamper yourself, even if its only a few minutes out of the day.  These super simple, easy steps are one of the many things I do to stay sane and to keep feeling my best during such a crazy hormonal transition!!!  Give yourself some grace, put on a mask and read a book.

Heres to beautiful skin, inside and out.
